Short for Secure Sockets Layer, it is a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using a public key to encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, Web pages that require an SSL connection start with https instead of http. Gopher King uses SSL (Security Socket Layer) to transmit data whenever possible, this includes the following browsers and devices, ? Palm clipping on Palm VII ? Eudora Web for Palm browser ? Web TV ? Internet Explorer ? Netscape ? Opera ? Pocket PC ? Microsoft Mobile Explorer on Cell Phones ?Note: Avantgo already has its own SSL encryption (certicom) built-in, so Gopher King does not provide the extra encryption. When your browser is in SSL mode, you will see this icon in the status bar. If your device has trouble using SSL, please let us know at service@gopherking.com. My Emails Add Email Account Wizard The first time you enter the Emails page, there is only one Email link available - "Add new Email Account". This is where we will start. Click on the link, you will get to the Add Email Account Wizard Page. If you prefer to enter your Email account settings manually, click on the "manual" link and follow instructions in the following section (Add Email Account Step 1 of 3). With the wizard, Gopher King will auto-detect the best settings based on your Email address and password. You only need to enter your Email address and Email password. If the auto-detection works, it will show "success" and go back to the "My Emails" main page. If not, you can add it manually following instructions in the next section. Add Email Account Step 1 of 3 Select your Email provider from the drop down list. If your provider is not in the list, select "None of the following". ?Note about MSN: Pay extra attention if you use MSN. There are two types of MSN Email accounts, POP Mail and Web Mail. If you are an old MSN user who always uses Outlook or Outlook Express to get your Emails, your account is POP Mail; if you use the MSN Web Mail Interface to retrieve your Email, your account is Web Mail. Click on "Submit" when you are done. Add Email Account Step 2 of 3 Now you are at Add Email Account Step 2 of 3. If you chose one of the pre-selected providers in step 1, most of your settings will show up here automatically. If not, you need to fill in the settings yourself. ?Note: Pay attention to the bold explanations, you might need to go some extra settings with your Email providers. These are the standard settings in any Email client program. ? Mail Server - This is your POP (POP3 or incoming message) server, ask your ISP or system admin for POP server address. You can also look it up in Outlook Express by going to Tools -> Accounts -> Mail Tab -> Select Your Email Account -> Click on Properties button -> Servers Tab -> It's the setting under Incoming Mail (POP3). ? Protocol - 99% of ISPs uses POP protocol. Use POP if you are not sure, our system will verify it before accepting it. Some corporate accounts and Compuserve 2000 (NOT Compuserve classic) supports IMAP. Do NOT use SPOP or SIMAP unless you know exactly what you are doing or the system pre-selects the setting for you. ? User Name - 99% chance your User Name is the portion before the "@" sign of your Email address, for example, if your Email is johndoe@yourdomain.com, then your user name is johndoe. ? Password - Your Email password. This is the password you use to get your Emails. ?Note about AOL password: You should use your AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) password instead of your screen password. If you have AIM running on your desktop computer, you should turn if off before attempting to add the AOL account in Gopher King. For more tips on AOL errors and problems, see the Troubleshooting Chapter. ? Reply-To - You can define a different address for the recipient to reply to. This field is optional. Leave it empty if you are not going to use it. Click on "Submit" when you are done. The system will check the entries and try to connect to your Email server and verify the settings. ? If you get an error saying "Unable to log in to server", it means either the server is down (unlikely) or your username/password is wrong (likely). Check your username/password and try again later. ? If you get an error saying, "This Email account already exists in your profile", it means that the Email account has already been added, and you are trying to add it again. Stop and go back. ?Note that Gopher King does not require your SMTP server setting for outgoing Emails. For Hotmail and MSN outgoing messages, they are sent through Hotmail and MSN's Email system. For other type of Email systems, outgoing messages are sent through Gopher King's own Email gateway. The gateway works as a replacement of your own SMTP server. ?If you encounter any problem here, see the Troubleshooting Chapter for help. Add Email Account Step 3 of 3 If everything checks out OK in Step 2, you will be taken to Add Email Account Step 3 of 3 - Success!!! Click on "Go back to Emails page" link and your new Email account will be listed there. ?More Email Accounts? Repeat Step 1 to 3 for all other Email accounts you have. ?For more ways to customize your Email account (like My Emails Summary) check the later part of this chapter. Click on the link, you will get to the Add new News Account page. There is only one mandatory field you need to fill in - "Newsgroup," i.e., the name of the newsgroup you would like to add. If you don't know the name of the newsgroup, you may search for it by clicking on the "Search for news groups" link. ? We recommend you to select "Yes" under the Use Auto-Select Server. We maintain a list of 15 good news servers on the Internet and pull the data from those servers. If you select Yes, skip all other fields below and click on submit directly. ? If you select No, then you must enter your own news server. ? If your own news server requires a username and password, you should enter them. ? Newsgroups with zero (0) messages cannot be added. Search for Newsgroups: Enter one keyword, e.g., if you are looking for Palm related topics, enter palm and click on "Submit". It may take up to 90 seconds to search all the newsgroup servers, a list of servers will be returned if matches are found. You may click on one of the matches and it will take you directly to the Add News Account page. Add News Account Step 2 of 2 Once you are ready click on the "Submit" button, our system will validate the settings and try to connect to the server. ? If you get an error message saying "Unable to log into server," either the server is not accepting connections, or your username password combination is wrong. If everything goes OK, you will taken back directly to the Newsgroup page and your new Newsgroup account will appear there. ?More Newsgroup Accounts? Repeat Step 1 to 3 for all other Newsgroup accounts you have. Done? OK I am done customizing my service, now what? Log out from the service from your PC (but don't trash the PC yet, we may need it later). We will go to the next step and set up your device(s). ?For description on how to use other type of services, please go to the Using Other Services Chapter. Set up your device(s) Depending on the type of device(s) and the type of Internet connection you have, there are different setup procedures, so please pick and choose. Connection Type: First, let's look at what kind of connection you have to the Internet. ? Online mode - If you have a direct connection to the Internet, though a wireless service, a modem, an IR connection, a serial connection, a Web TV, or a network. ? Offline mode - If you do not have a direct connection to the Internet, and you get information onto your devices through a "hot sync". ?Online mode is always better than offline mode because you get live data from the Gopher King service. ?If you don't have a mobile device and would like to see some typical hardware setups, please go to the Hardware and Typical Setup Chapter. Online Mode Please make sure your device is in online mode before follow these instructions. Now, let's see, what kind of device do you have? Palm VII/VIIx/i705 - you must have the palm.net wireless service. Note this is Palm VII/i705 only, not including other Palms. ? Make sure your palm.net connection is working. ? From your desktop computer, download the Gopher King PQA (web clipping application) from the website front page (http://www.gopherking.com). Install it using Desktop Manager and perform a hot sync. a. For Palm VII and VIIx, download this file, http://www.gopherking.com/mmail.pqa b. For Palm i705, you can use the above file, or you can use the color-enabled version, http://www.gopherking.com/mmailc.pqa ? Once the hot sync is done, you will have a new Gopher King icon under applications, click on the icon to launch the Gopher King PQA, it will ask you to raise the antenna if it's not raised already. ? Fill in your username and password that you registered with Gopher King, and click on "Submit". If you are the only one using this Palm and would like to avoid the hassle of entering your username and password each time you use Gopher King, check the box saying "save my login and password," and our system will remember your settings - in the future, you only need to click on "Quick Login." ?If you entered a wrong username or password, you will get an error message saying "We could not authenticate you in our system". ?If you receive a 500 or 502 message using the web clipping application, this is usually caused by the DNS server of palm.net, you can use the "Gopher King Backup" link to retrieve your Emails (this is in the current version 1.91 of the Gopher King Web Clipping Application). Samsung SPH-I300 - you should have already subscribed to either Sprint or Verizon's cell phone service when you got the phone, go to this URL http://www.gopherking.com/connect/samsungi300.html for details. Kyocera SmartPhone 6035 - you should have already subscribed to either Sprint or Verizon's cell phone service when you got this phone, go to this URL http://www.gopherking.com/connect/kyocera6035.html for details. All Other Palm OS based devices - Palm III, V, m500, m505, Handspring Visor, Sony Clie, Handera, Kyocera, etc. ? To connect these device to Internet wirelessly, for details go to this URL, http://www.gopherking.com/connect/index.html ?How to check the version of PalmOS on your device? (This is used in the following section to determine whether you can use Web Clipping). 1. Turn on your Palm, then click on the application launcher icon, now you will see all the applications on your Palm. 2. Click on to bring down the menu, a screen like the following will show up, 3. Now click on "Info", and a new screen will show up like the following, 4. Click on the "Version" button, another screen will show up like the following, 5. In this case, we have a device with a Palm OS version v 4.0. ? If you have a Palm m500/m505 OR any PalmOS device with an OS version at least 4.1 AND a color screen (Palm m500/m505 and i705 are the only ones), you can use the Gopher King color Web Clipping Application at http://www.gopherking.com/mmailc.pqa, download this file and install with Palm Desktop (see Palm VII instructions above). This file is ONLY for devices with Palm OS 4.1 and above – so Palm III, V or m100, m105 will NOT work with this file. ? If you have other Palm OS devices with an OS version less than 4.1, you have two options, o Option 1: Purchase and install the Palm Mobile Internet Kit (MIK). Then you can use the same instructions as the Palm VII to install the web clipping application (PQA) located at http://www.gopherking.com/mmail.pqa. For more information on the MIK, go to http://www.palm.com/software/mik/. o Option 2: If you do not have the Mobile Internet Kit (MIK) from Palm installed on your device, you do NOT need the PQA, repeat, you do NOT need the PQA file. Don't download it form the front page. The only thing you need is a working web browser for your device. If you don't have one, you have these options, ? Blazer from Handspring, $19.95. Free with VisorPhone purchase, http://www.handspring.com/software/hs_software.jhtml. – this is the best browser on PalmOS, which will also give you the best experience with Gopher King ? Once you have the browser downloaded and installed and working properly, connect to Internet and point your browser to http://www.gopherking.com. ? Log in with your username and password, if you entered a wrong username or password, you will get an error message saying "We could not authenticate you in our system". Pocket PC and Windows CE based devices – like Compaq iPAQ, HP Jornada, etc. ? To connect these device to Internet wirelessly, for details go to this URL, http://www.gopherking.com/connect/index.html ? The only thing you need is a working web browser for your device. Microsoft bundle their browser with these devices, if you don't have one, you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/downloads/pie11.asp. ? Once you have the browser downloaded and installed and working properly, connect to Internet and point your browser to http://www.gopherking.com. ? Blackberry – you must have a live connection and a working browser (like GoAmerica). ? Just connect to Internet and point your browser to http://www.gopherking.com. ? Log in with your username and password, if you entered a wrong username or password, you will get an error message saying "We could not authenticate you in our system". WAP-enabled cell phones - like Ericsson R380, R320, R520 and R300, etc. ? All these phones have built-in WAP browsers, just connect to Internet and point your browser to http://www.gopherking.com. ? Log in with your username and password, if you entered a wrong username or password, you will get an error message saying "We could not authenticate you in our system". ?Because WAP phones and services vary too much, you might get an error message from your carrier. Please Email us if you get an error message from your proxy server, e.g., "Object Access Not Allowed" and we will try to fix it. ?To avoid entering the username and password on your WAP-enabled cell phone when coming to the Gopher King site, you can enter a special URL when you set up the properties of the bookmark, here is the format of the URL http://www.gopherking.com/index1.html?screenname=YOURUSERNAME&screenpassw ord=YOURPASSWORD&phase=submit ?You need to replace "YOURUSERNAME" with your Gopher King user name, and replace "YOURPASSWORD" with your Gopher King password. For example, if your Gopher King username is johndoe, and your password is mysecrets, then the URL you will use is http://www.gopherking.com/index1.html?screenname=johndoe&screenpassword=mysecret s&phase=submit ?Please note that username and password are case sensitive. Offline Mode Offline mode support is provided through Avantgo. So only the following are supported: ? All Palm OS based devices excluding Palm VII ? Pocket PC and Windows CE based devices ?Although Gopher King works fine with Avantgo in offline mode, we recommend you get some kind of live connection to the Internet to get the full functions of this service. ?Other offline browsers (e.g., Offline Explorer) are also supported in non-secure mode. To use Getting Meta Products Offline Explorer (Pro) and Ruksun Whack Force working with Gopher King, you need to enter a special URL when you set up the properties of the download, here is the format of the URL http://www.gopherking.com/index1.html?screenname=YOURUSERNAME&screenpassword =YOURPASSWORD&phase=submit ?You need to replace "YOURUSERNAME" with your Gopher King user name, and replace "YOURPASSWORD" with your Gopher King password. For example, if your Gopher King username is johndoe, and your password is mysecrets, then the URL you will use is http://www.gopherking.com/index1.html?screenname=johndoe&screenpassword=mysecrets& phase=submit ?Please note that username and password are case sensitive. Although the example provided here is for Palm platform, CE platform is exactly the same. Signup with Avantgo In order to use Gopher King in offline mode, you need to sign up with Avantgo at http://www.avantgo.com (if you haven't done so). Install Avantgo onto your device following Avantgo's instructions (if you haven't done so). Create Gopher King Channel on Avantgo You can also try our new Auto Create Channel link and make it easy for yourself. Don't forget to click on Save Channel button when you are done. Please do not alter the settings unless you know exactly what you are doing. Or if you are an expert Avantgo user, you may log on to Avantgo from your PC. Create a new custom channel following the example below. You should set the maximum channel size according to your own needs. Link depth should be between 2 and 7. First Hot Sync Perform a hot sync between your PC and device. Once the hot sync is finished, click on the Avantgo Icon. You will get a screen like the following. Click on the Gopher King link and scroll down to the bottom, fill in your username and password (even if it might say "assigned") and make sure you check the Save My Login and Password box, this is essential for this to work. Once you have done that, you will get a notice saying that the submission has been recorded and the information will be sent during the next sync. Second Hot Sync Now perform another hot sync. This time it will take a while because Avantgo will download the Emails in your account. Once the hot sync is finished, launch Avantgo and click on the Gopher King link, you now have full access to all your Emails. In the future, you just need to perform a hot sync to download all your Emails. ?To reduce the size of Avantgo channel, you may go into "Edit Profile" and customize the links on the front page. You may also limit the folders you view by going into "Edit" under each Email account. You can selectively block certain folders there. ?If you switched to a different username and would like to use the new username instead of the old one with Avantgo, you can click on the "Log Out" button inside the Gopher King channel, during the next sync, the old user name will be cleared and you can log in with the new one. How does the Gopher King Personal Email System work (and why it's different)? Unlike many other Email clients and systems, the way Gopher King works is by connecting to the Email servers directly, without downloading everything onto your PDA. So it does not occupy more than 5k of your PDA's memory at any time. All operations of messages are done directly on the server (in other words, we don't download, we connect). That's why if you are using Gopher King in Online Mode, you don't have to leave any extra space for it. However in Offline Mode (when you hotsync through Avantgo or others), you do need to have the space on your PDA to store the downloaded messages – those are copies of the messages on your Email server. In addition, Gopher King always "keep a copy on the server," so you can always get your Emails on your desktop computer later. Unless you delete a message specifically (by clicking on the Delete button), the message will be always on the server. ?Gopher King does not provide SMTP relay with the Personal Email plan, thus the only way to send messages through Gopher King is by using our service directly. This is an intended behavior to prevent Spammers using us as an open relay. However, Gopher King Gold Email service subscribers do get their own @gopherking.net account, and they are able to use Gopher King's SMTP server to send out messages using any Email client, for more information see Chapter 3 – Gold Email Service. The Gopher King Personal Email Service can be completely customized by you to fit your needs. We will explain the functions by going through each screen. Email Main Screen The Email Main screen looks like this, Emails Home Refresh ac987654321@hotmail.com Compose Notify Edit Del Spam Msnpromo (2/2) Inbox (0/5) Sentitems (0/4) Deleteditems (0/0) Bulkmail (0/0) Spam (15) mobilEmailtest@yahoo.com Compose Notify Edit Del Spam INBOX (5/5) Spam (2) Add new Email account Guaranteed Emails All your Email accounts are listed under the main screen. If an Email account supports multiple folders (for example, IMAP, Hotmail, MSN Web Mail, AOL), those folders will be listed here, too. The "Spam" folder is a special folder where all Spam Emails are stored - we will explain the anti-Spam features later in this chapter. You can click on the folder names and go directly to that folder. The links on the main screen, ? Home – Go back to the main Gopher King front page ? Refresh – Refresh the current page manually and check for new messages. If you use a PC with IE or Netscape, you can also set up the auto-refresh in your Profile to refresh the pages automatically. ? Compose – Write a new Email from that particular account. For example, if you click the Compose link under ac987654321@hotmail.com, your message's sender will be that address, NOT an assigned address from Gopher King. ? Notify – You can choose to send a notification to yourself on a alphanumeric pager, a two-way pager or an SMS cell phone when you receive a new Email. You can also redirect your Email messages. ? Edit – You can change the settings of the Email account and also block certain folders if the Email account supports multiple folders. ? Del – You can delete the Email account altogether. ? Spam – You can control the behavior of the anti-Spam features and the Spam folder. ? Add new Email Account – Add a new Email account you have Compose ? From: This is your name (you can modify it) and your Email address. ? Quick list To: You may choose one Email from your Quick List as the recipient. Quick List is defined as part of "My Addressbook," see Chapter 5 for details.. ? To: Your recipients, if you have more than one Email address, separate them with comma (,), NOT semicolon or space. If you selected a recipient from the Quick list above, then recipients from these two fields will be combined. ? Address Book – You may choose recipients from your address book. ? cc: For people who you would like to send a copy of the Email, and be viewable to all recipients. ? bcc: Send a copy of the Email, however, the recipients in this field will not be viewable to all recipients. ? Reply-To: You can define a separate address where people could reply to. This can be pre-defined under the "Edit" link. ? Subject: The subject of your message. ? Attachment: This field is only available on devices that support it (not available on Palm or cell phones). You may attach one file to the Email. ? Save a Copy to Sent Items folder or Bcc Myself a Copy: If your Email server supports "Sent Items" folder, a copy of the Email will be saved there. If your Email server does not support Sent Items folder, you can bcc yourself a copy. ? Message: Type your Email message here. ? Signature: You may append a signature to your Email. This can be pre-defined under the "Edit" link. ? Guaranteed Delivery: You can send this Email as a guaranteed delivery, the delivery results will be available once the message is sent – use the "Guaranteed Emails" link on the Email main view. If the sender did not receive the Email, the delivery will be reattempted every day for up to 7 days. Check this box when you want make sure the recipient will receive the Email. Note that Guaranteed Email is not available with Redirect. Click on "Send" button once you are done. Your message will be sent and you will be taken back to the previous screen. If you are replying or forwarding or redirecting a message, you also have the option to "SendDel" the message, you will send the new message out and delete the original message at the same time. If your Email server supports multiple folders (Hotmail, MSN Web Mail, IMAP, AOL), you can also do a "SendMove", you will send the new message out and move the original message to the destination folder at the same time. Notify ? Notification Type o No Notification – do NOT send notification, you can use this to quickly turn on/off the notification function without losing any other settings. o Summary Only - one sentence, "4 new messages received at your ac987654321@hotmail.com account on 13:59" - this is good for all devices with a low character limit (less than 50 characters). o Digest - summary plus From, Subject and first 90 characters from each message - this is good for most devices with a moderate character limit (between 125 and 250 characters). o Complete Redirect - Completely redirect the new messages - don't use this with SMS phones, it redirects the entire Emails which may exceed the SMS character limit. This option is perfect for two-way pagers, though. ? Notification Interval - Choose one of the pre-defined intervals, this determines how often Gopher King check for new Emails in your Email account, from every 15 minutes to every 24 hours. ? Email Address or SMS Number - Most SMS phone and pager carriers give you an Email address with the phone/pager; if that's the case, enter the Email address. It's always better than enter an SMS phone number directly. If you do enter an SMS phone number, you should test your number (using carrier 1 – ICQ under the Send Message to Pager/Cell Phone on the Gopher King front page) before turn on notification because we do not check the validity of the number here. Format of phone number, +countrycode areacode phonenumber. ? Only Notify From Hour and To Hour - You may also choose a period during the day where the notification will occur. This is useful when you do not want to be disturbed at night. The default is 9AM to 5PM your local time (based your time zone setting in your profile). If you want 24-hour notice, change both from and to fields to zero (0). Click on "Submit" button once you are done, your settings will be saved and the notification service will start/stop within 15 minutes. ?Some old Email systems (older POP or IMAP) changes the unique ID of each message every time the user logs in, that's why duplicate notifications will happen, please let us know if this happens to you (redirect us the duplicated message), we will try to implement a workaround. ?Only when you have new message(s) at your Email account, the notification will be sent. Edit On this page you may change the settings of your Email account and customize the look and feel of the Email messages. Also, if your Email account supports multiple folders, you may block folders here. ? Email Address - this is your Email address; don't change this unless something is wrong. ? Mail Server - this is Email server. For some Email providers (like AOL and Hotmail), this filed might be empty. Similarly, don't change this unless something is wrong. ? Protocol - this is the protocol the Email server uses. Don't change this unless something is wrong. ? User Name - this is the Email system user name, different Email systems have different user name conventions. Don't change this unless something is wrong. ? Password - this is the Email system password. Don't' change this unless something is wrong. ? Reply-To - you may pre-define a reply-to address here, you may also enter or modify on the Compose Email page. ? Default Domain if no @ sign found in Email address – this is used when you send Email often to a certain domain, for example, your company's domain name is mycompany.com, and you enter it here. When you compose a new Email message to joe_schmoe@mycompany.com, you only need to type joe_schmoe in the to field. ? Show This Account Under Email Summary - If selected, the last three Emails in this account will be shown on the My Emails Summary page. The behavior of that page is controller by this setting under each Email account. ? Show Folders on Folder view and Message View – If selected, all folders in the Email account will be displayed at the top of the Folder View and Message View pages. Default is "Yes". ? View Email As - You can choose to view your Emails as HTML (if possible, determined by your device and the original Email) or TEXT only (no matter what device you use). If your device does not support HTML Email viewing, our system will automatically use TEXT. ? Remove Extra lines to save bandwidth – This is used mostly for mobile devices; you should turn this on to save bandwidth and screen space. It removes extra white space between lines. ? Always show Email header – Many of the people who receive spasm would like to report them to proper authorities, you can use the Email header as a way to trace the offenders. In addition to the header, the actual HTML/TEXT code inside the Email will also be shown if this option is enabled. ? Display Inline Images - You can choose to view picture attachments to your Email inside the Email (if possible, determined by your service and the original Email). Image types include, bmp, gif, jpg, tif, pct, etc. This is NOT recommended if you are using a wireless device, because images tend to be huge in size compared with the character limits of wireless devices. ? Sort Messages You may sort the messages in your Email folders by date, subject, and from, ascending or descending. ? Always Show Original Message When Replying – This is useful when you reply to an Email and would like to see the original text, however, for some wireless devices (e.g., Palm VII and WAP cell phones), their character limit is so low that this option will ignored and the original text will NOT be sent at all. ? If yes above, prefix Original Message with – For users who are familiar with Eudora, this is a similar to the ">" character that appears before each line of the original text. ? Always Save a copy to Sent Items or Bcc Myself – When you send/reply, you can always save a copy to Sent Items folder (if your sever supports multiple folders and there is Sent Items folder available, e.g., Hotmail, IMAP, SIMAP, MSN Web Mail), or Bcc yourself a copy (if you server does not support multiple folders, e.g., POP and MSN POP). ? When Reporting Spam send copy to SpamCop – This setting is for advanced user only. If changed to yes, when you click on the "Report Spam" button in the message view, a copy will also be sent to Spamcop. You will need to signup with Spamcop and obtain your own Unique Spam Reporting Address for this to work. For details, see http://spamcop.net ? Signature Block 1-3 Name - You can define up to three default signature blocks that can be attached to outgoing Emails. These are entirely optional. The "Name" field will NOT be a part of the signature block - it's only an identifier. ? Signature Block 1-3 Text – This is the actual signature block text that will go out at the end of Emails. ? (For IMAP server only) IMAP Root Folder Path – this is where you can define the root folder of your IMAP folders, 99% of time it's INBOX if used ? (For IMAP server only) IMAP Show Short Folder Name – if enabled, then all parent level folder names will be hidden from display. For example, INBOX.Account1.Folder1 will be displayed as Folder1. Turn this on to save bandwidth, however, if you have sub- folders with the same names, disable this to avoid confusion. ? (For IMAP server only) Do NOT count the number of total messages and new messages in each folder - Changing this to yes would speed up the page load when you have a lot of folders. This is useful when you have more than 10 folders displayed on the Email main view page. Default is "No". Note that by changing this to Yes, all folders will always show up with the zero count (0/0). Click on "Submit" button once you are done and your settings will be saved, and you will be taken back to the Emails main screen. Block Folders (only available to Email accounts that support multiple folders, including IMAP, SIMAP, Hotmail, MSN Web Mail, AOL): Check the folder you would like to block and they will not show up on your Email front page Click on "Block" button once you are done and the changes will take effect immediately. If you enable SPAM filter, your Email account will be checked every hour (however, if you have Email notification enabled, this might be different) and Spam Emails will be removed from your inbox and placed under a special folder called "SPAM" in your Gopher King account. This folder is ONLY accessible through the Gopher King system - it is NOT accessible through your Outlook or Outlook Express. ? However, if you have Email notification turned on, we will first check your account for Spam Emails, then send out notification for real messages only. This way we can decrease the number of message sent to you and thus lower your cost. ? Messages in "SPAM" folder older than 7 days are deleted automatically. ? The system filter is able to catch about 98% of all spam, it is based on pre-defined rules and a pre-defined list of Spam senders and Spam software signatures. ? If the Email header does not contain a "To:" filed (this is a characteristic of many Spam mailers) ? If the from Email address matches one of the known Spammers in our database ? If the subject or body contains one or more of the signatures of known Spammers in our database ? Filter Type: You can use the system rules only, your own blacklist or both combined. ? On the fly Spam filter: If filter is enabled above, run Spam filter each time Email main view or folder view is refreshed: ? My Blacklist: Enter Email addresses you would like to block and separate them by comma. Emails from those addresses will also be placed in the SPAM folder. ? My Whitelist. Enter Email addresses you would like to allow and separate them by comma. Emails from those addresses will NOT be scanned for SPAM. Click on "Submit" button when you are ready, the Spam filter will start working within an hour. ?If you turn off the SPAM filter, the SPAM folder will be hidden from your account. ?If you see a Spam Email that was not removed by the Spam filter, REDIRECT it to abuse@gopherking.com and we will analyze it and put up necessary countermeasures. Add new Email Account You can add a new Email account to your profile. So if you missed something, don't worry, just come back and change it. One-box vs. All-box These two terms were coined by Gopher King to describe the unique two unique features of Gopher King. All-box: All-box is the term we use to describe the mechanism of the Gopher King Personal Email service. The way it works is by accessing every account the user has individually, and all actions (send, receive, reply, forward, redirect, etc.) are performed in each account. For example, ac987654321@hotmail.com - THIS IS A HOTMAIL ACCOUNT Compose Notify Edit Del Spam Inbox (0/10) Sentitems (0/2) Deleteditems (0/0) Spam (1) mobilEmailtest@yahoo.com - THIS IS A YAHOO ACCOUNT Compose Notify Edit Del Spam INBOX (7/7) In the above example, the user has two accounts, a Hotmail account and a Yahoo account, the user would use each account individually. When the user composes an Email under the Yahoo account, the Email will be sent under the Yahoo account. The more Email accounts the user has, the longer the page gets. The advantage of this method is that the user has complete control over each Email account and each folder (if the account support multiple folders, in the example, Hotmail supports multiple folder, so all folders are listed, while Yahoo is POP, so just INBOX is listed). One-box: One-box is the term we use to describe the mechanism of a lot of Email account "consolidating" solutions. The way they work is by forwarding all existing Email accounts into a single consolidated account. Using the same accounts as above, the user would first get a "permanent" Email account from the provider, e.g., john_doe@permanentEmail.com, then setup forward on both the Hotmail account and the Yahoo account to forward all Emails to john_doe@permanentEmail.com. The advantage of this method is that it allows the user to get all Emails in one account. The problem is that when he replies, he is replying from john_doe@permanentEmail.com, and that creates more problems when combined with a PDA. Gopher King One-box: Gopher King's Advanced One-Box solution is based on the regular One-box method, but takes it steps further. The advantages include, ? Gopher King gives the user a full-fledged IMAP/POP/SMTP account; the user has access to multiple folders (using IMAP), and is able to create folders and sub-folders. ? Instead of forcing the user to setup forwarding on each account (some Email providers doesn't have the forwarding function), Gopher King will go out and "grab" the new incoming messages automatically. ? The user has the choice to put the "grabbed" message in the INBOX or ANY other folder in his @gopherking.com. For example, the above user could put the new messages from his Hotmail account in a folder named "My Hotmail," and his Yahoo messages in a folder named "My Yahoo Messages." ? When the messages are grabbed from the Email servers, the user has the choice to delete them from the account or leave a copy on the server. Gopher King's unique de-dupe function avoids any duplicate message downloads altogether (while other solutions would download the same messages again and again). ? When Anti-Spam is enabled, the Spam filter works on all incoming Emails and moves all Spam Emails to the "Spam" folder. ? In addition to the automatic "grabbing," Gopher King also allows the user to define rules to process all incoming messages and outgoing messages. Messages could be moved, deleted, forwarded, redirected, and notified by using the rules. ? All incoming and outgoing Emails are scanned automatically for viruses, and if a virus is found, the message will be bounced to the sender. Gopher King Gold Email Service users have the choice between "All-box" and "One-box," and they can make the switch between the two modes with a single setting change. In this manual, when we use the term "One-box," we are referring to the Gopher King One-box, not the regular One-box solutions our competitors offer. For example, testuser@gopherking.net Compose Edit Rules Sync Spam INBOX (0/2) New - THE INBOX Drafts (0/0) Hotmail (0/0) New Ren Del - THIS IS WHERE THE USER PUTS HIS "GRABBED" HOTMAIL MESSAGES Netscape (0/0) New Ren Del - THIS IS WHERE THE USER PUTS HIS "GRABBED" NETSCAPE.NET MESSAGES Sent Items (0/2) New Spam (4/8) Empty - SPAMS ARE AUTOMATICALLY MOVED TO THIS FOLDER IF ANTI-SPAM IS ENABLED Trash (0/0) Purge Yahoo (0/0) New Ren Del - THIS IS WHERE THE USER PUTS HIS "GRABBED" YAHOO MESSAGES Remember, all the advanced processing options (like "grabbing", "rules") are only available in the One-box mode. If you choose to use your Gold Email account in All-box mode, you will not be able to use the grabbing or the rules. My Emails - First Time Setup After you have become a paid user, the first time you use the "My Emails" function, you will see a warning "You don't' have a gopherking.net account, click here to setup." Click on the link and you can setup your @gopherking.net account. ?Choose your @gopherking.net Email address carefully, there is no way to reset this after it's done, so before you hit the "Submit" button, think twice. If you get an error message, "the username has already taken," then you have to choose another username. Remember there is no confirmation step, so whatever you choose it will be permanent. Once you have chosen your @gopherking.net account, the system will automatically give you the basic settings which you can use to access your new @gopherking.net account through any other client. Write these down or print it out. For example, if you choose the username john_doe, then, ? Email address: john_doe@gopherking.net ? Incoming Email Server: mail.gopherking.net ? Incoming Email Server Type: IMAP (IMAP client is highly recommended; although POP is allowed, it will not support multiple folders, and many Email clients will remove all messages from the INBOX after downloading) ? Outgoing Email Server (SMTP): mail.gopherking.net ? Username: john_doe@gopherking.net (exactly the same as your Email address – NOT just the portion before the @ sign) ? Password: always the same as your Gopher King password (if you ever change your Gopher King password, your Email password will be automatically changed to the same as well) Edit Profile These are the basic settings you can change to customize the look and navigation structure of your service. Basic information ? Password - this is where you can change your login password, don't change it unless you intend to. ? Real Name - this is where you can change your name that will show up in outgoing messages. Auto Refresh ? Auto Refresh – this only works on browsers that supports the auto-refresh tag and it works on the Email pages. Look and Feel on All Pages ? We maintain a list of 15 good news servers on the Internet and pull the data from those servers. If you select Yes, skip all other fields below and click on submit directly. ? If you select No, then you must enter your own news server. ? If your own news server requires a username and password, you should enter them. ? Newsgroups with zero (0) messages cannot be added. Search for Newsgroups: Enter one keyword, e.g., if you are looking for Palm related topics, enter palm and click on "Submit". You will need to signup with Spamcop and obtain your own Unique Spam Reporting Address for this to work. For details, see http://spamcop.net ? Signature Block 1-3 Name - You can define up to three default signature blocks that can be attached to outgoing Emails. These are entirely optional. The "Name" field will NOT be a part of the signature block - it's only an identifier. ? Signature Block 1-3 Text – This is the actual signature block text that will go out at the end of Emails. ? IMAP Root Folder Path – always INBOX, do not change this setting ? IMAP Show Short Folder Name – if enabled, then all parent level folder names will be hidden from display. For example, INBOX.Account1.Folder1 will be displayed as Folder1. Turn this on to save bandwidth, however, if you have sub-folders with the same names, disable this to avoid confusion. Customize Email Message View This allow you to choose the fields you see on the Email Message page, including From, To, Cc, Bcc, Date, Subject, Attachment(s), View Header Link. Uncheck the box to hide the field. Click on "Change View" button once you are done and the changes will take effect immediately. Rules (One-box mode only) This is where you can define your rules for incoming and outgoing messages. Please note that the Email Sync settings are defined under the "Sync" link in the Email Main Screen, not here. Email Rules Home Emails 20 Incoming from bobhuang.com redirect to bobhuang1@attbi.com Edit Del 19 Move to Drafts from Yahoo if from gopherking Edit Del 15 Incoming bobhuang.com delete Edit Del Change Priority Add new Rule All the rules (if any) are listed on this page by their priority (the number in front of the rule's name). The higher the number, the higher the priority. Rules with higher priority will be executed first. You can change the sequence of the rules by changing the priority number, click on "Change Priority" when you are done. ? Edit – you can edit the details of the rule. ? Delete – you can delete the details of the rule, confirm with "Yes" on the next page. ? Add new Rule – you can add a new rule. Add New Rule (One-box mode only) Add Email Rule Home Rules Apply this rule to [ ] Email account(s), [Incoming, Outgoing] messages, When [All, From Name or Email address, To Email address, Cc Email address, To or CC Email address, Subject, Body] [All, Contains] [ ] Take action, [Nothing, Delete, Move, Copy, Forward, Redirect, Notify] to destination [ ], For Move and Copy, the destination folder, [INBOX Drafts Hotmail Netscape Sent Items Spam Trash Yahoo] For Redirect and Notify, the destination Email address [ ](or SMS phone number for Notify) . Give this Rule a Name [ ] And define a priority (between 1 and 999, the higher, the higher priority) [ ] Submit The definition is based on natural language, so the whole process should be self-explanatory. ?Please note that the notification sent by rules is limited to Digest only, which includes, From, Subject and first 90 characters from each message - this is good for most devices with a moderate character limit (between 125 and 250 characters). You may also use "Redirect" instead of "Notify" if your device accept more characters. Edit Rule (One-box mode only) Similar to the Add Rule above, here you can change the Rule's definition. Email Accounts and Sync Settings (One-box mode only) The Email accounts and Sync Settings page lists all Email accounts you have defined and their sync settings with your @gopherking.net account. You can sync these accounts to the INBOX, or any other folder you choose. Before you can sync, you have to create the new folders in the Email Main Screen. You have X account(s) except for your gopherking.net Email account – this give you a summary of your Email accounts ? Add new Email account to Sync – this allows you to add a new Email account to be synced ? Last Successful Sync at – this is the last time the sync was preformed ? Sync to Folder – this is where to define which folder to hold the "grabbed" message from this Email account. ? Leave a copy of Server – you can choose to leave a copy of the message on the server for your PC to pick up later, change this to "No" if your Email server has a tight size limit. ? Change – Click on the button when you are ready to change. ? Sync All Accounts Now (Sync) – this allows you to perform a one-the-spot sync with all your Email accounts. ?Please note that the One-box synchronization routine is NOT a complete sync process. It only downloads new messages from the account into the @gopherking.net account, not completely sync all messages with the remote Email account. ?One-box synchronization is performed hourly automatically in the background. If you see "Synchronizing now" in Email main view and/or Email folder view, it means that the server if performing One-box synchronization. You can also perform a on-the-spot synchronization by clicking on the "Sync All Now" link, this will start a background synchronization process immediately. Add new Email Account Add Email Account Wizard Once you click on the "Add new Email account to sync" link, you will see the Add Email account wizard. Spam in One-box Mode For Spam feature in All-box mode see Chapter 2 for details. This page controls the anti-Spam features. ? If you enable SPAM filter, your @gopherking.net Email account will be checked every hour (however, if you have Email notification enabled, this might be different) and Spam Emails will be removed from your inbox and placed under the "Spam" folder. This folder is accessible through any IMAP-compliant Email client, like your Outlook or Outlook Express. Email messages that are synced from your other Email accounts are also checked for Spam, and if a Spam is found, it's also moved to the "Spam" folder. ? Messages in the "SPAM" folder are NOT deleted automatically, you can use the "Empty" link to move everything in the Spam folder into trash. You can also add a new Email address to your white list directly if you are looking at any message in your Spam folder. Click on "Submit" button when you are ready, the Spam filter will start working within an hour. ?If you see a Spam Email that was not removed by the Spam filter, REDIRECT (using ReportSpam button when inside a message) it to abuse@gopherking.com and we will analyze it and put up necessary countermeasures. @gopherking.net Folder Structure The One-box mode Gopher King service relies on the following folders to function, do NOT delete, rename or move the following folders. ? You can modify these limits by going to the "Advanced Email Options" section under "Edit Profile" in the main menu. Using Your @gopherking.net Account with Other Email Clients Basic Settings Assume your @gopherking.net Email address is john_doe@gopherking.net, ? Email address: john_doe@gopherking.net ? Incoming Email Server: mail.gopherking.net ? Incoming Email Server Type: IMAP (IMAP client is highly recommended; although POP is allowed, it will not support multiple folders, and many Email clients will remove all messages from the INBOX after downloading – be careful) ? Outgoing Email Server (SMTP): mail.gopherking.net ? Username: john_doe@gopherking.net (exactly the same as your Email address – NOT just the portion before the @ sign) ? Password: always the same as your Gopher King password (if you ever change your Gopher King password, your @gopherking.net Email account password will be change automatically) ? Do NOT enable other settings like "Using Secure Password Authentication" etc. However, if you are using Eudora as your Email client you should enable "Use SMTP Authentication." Extended Settings ? IMAP Root Folder PATH: INBOX (important) ? Special Folders o Store special folders on IMAP server: Yes o Sent Items Path: Sent Items o Drafts Path: Drafts IMPORTANT RULES WHEN YOU USE OTHER EMAIL CLIENTS ? DO NOT delete, rename or move the following folders under any circumstances. o INBOX – All incoming messages sent directly to your @gopherking.net account are stored here. o Drafts – This folder is used to store "Saved" message to be edited and sent later. o Sent Items – This folder is used to store "Sent Items" messages. o Spam – This folder is used to store the "Spam" messages caught by the Spam filter o Trash – This is where deleted items will be stored (note on some Email clients, this folder is not used at all, e.g., Outlook Express). ? You will NOT be able to create sub-folders in your Email client, (Outlook, Messenger, Eudora), this is an expected behavior. o This is a feature of the Courier-IMAP server we use; the idea is not allow users to create sub-folders on other Email clients because some Email clients (like Netscape Messenger) will definitely mess up the whole folder structure. Instead you should always create the folders in Gopher King - then refresh the list of folders in your Email client. By creating all the folders in Gopher King, we can avoid potential problems. o However, this does not mean you cannot create sub-folders AFTER you have already created a sub-folder. For example if you have a folder called "Hotmail" and you created a sub-folder under it called "Hotmail Sub Folder 1", and once you reset your folder list in your Email client, the new folder will show up under "Hotmail" as a sub-folder, then you can right click on the "Hotmail" folder and create other sub-folders like "Hotmail Sub Folder 2" and "Hotmail Sub Folder 3". The idea behind this is that once the user is able to create the first sub-folder, he should be able to create more sub-folders, since it's permitted by the Gopher King system. ?How to refresh the folder list in Outlook XP (so that new folders created in Gopher King will show up)? Very easy, ? Right click on the the name of the Email account in the left pane, select "IMAP folders" from the list ? Click on "Reset List" in the new pop up window. ? Click on "OK" that's it. ?How to refresh the folder list in Eudora? Even easier, see this link for details, http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/eudora/eudora.win.imap.html#refresh ?If you receive a "Relay denied" error message when you try to send a message through your @gopherking.net account, don't be alarmed. Try press the "Send/Receive" button again and message will go out. This happens because we use a "POP before SMTP" mechanism to prevent Spammers. So basically what your Email program has to do is to login through IMAP or POP first, before it can send any messages. Chapter 2 Chapter 4 Gopher King Redirect Email T O use the Gopher King Redirect Email Service, follow the three step process. ? Sign Up ? Customize Service ? Test Service What is Gopher King Redirect Email Service? My Redirect Emails Add Email Account Wizard The first time you enter the Emails page, there is only one Email link available - "Add new Email Account". This is where we will start. Click on the link, you will get to the Add Redirect Email Account Wizard Page. If you prefer to enter your Email account settings manually, click on the "manual" link and follow instructions in the following section (Add Redirect Email Account Step 1 of 3). With the wizard, Gopher King will auto-detect the best settings based on your Email address and password. You only need to enter your Email address and Email password. The following are the settings you need to enter and/or choose. Source Email Address Password Delete Spams before Redirect (Note that Gopher King will not be responsible for deleted Emails, they will be gone forever) Redirect Email in As is or Text Only (Text only option will strip out all HTML tags AND all attachments) Keep Email on Original Server (If you choose yes, you will have to delete the messages manually later from the source Email server. If you choose no, all messages will be deleted from the source Email server automatically. If you enable "Skip Spams during Redirect" above and choose "yes" here, then messages identified as Spam by the system will be lost forever.) Destination Email Address * ? Source Email Address – This is the "From" Email account where the Email will be redirected ? Password - This is the password of the Source Email address ? Delete Spams before Redirect – Gopher King has the ability to detect and delete Spam messages. Although the accuracy is more than 98%, there is still a chance that it will treat a legitimate Email as Spam. (Note that Gopher King will not be responsible for deleted Emails, they will be gone forever, so use this feature with caution) ? Redirect Email As is or Text Only - Text only option will strip out all HTML tags AND all attachments; while As is will redirect the Email "as is." ? Keep Email on Original Server - If you choose yes, you will have to delete the messages manually later from the Source Email server. If you choose no, all messages will be deleted from the source Email server automatically. If you enable "Delete Spams before Redirect" above and choose "yes" here, then messages identified as Spam by the system will be lost forever. ? Destination Email Address - this is probably the most important setting here, where you want the redirected Email to go. Make sure you enter this address really carefully, or you risk losing Emails. Also test the settings with a few test Emails to make sure it works. If the auto-detection works, it will show "success" and go back to the "My Redirect Emails" main page. If not, you can add it manually following instructions in the next section. Add Redirect Email Account Step 1 of 3 Select your Email provider from the drop down list. Add Redirect Email Account Step 2 of 3 Now you are at Add Email Account Step 2 of 3. ? Click on "Submit" when you are done. The system will check the entries and try to connect to your Source Email server and verify the settings. ?If you encounter any problem here, see the Troubleshooting Chapter for help. Add Redirect Email Account Step 3 of 3 If everything checks out OK in Step 2, you will be taken to Add Redirect Email Account Step 3 of 3 - Success!!! Click on "Go back to My Redirect Emails page" link and your new Email account will be listed there. ?More Email Accounts? Repeat Step 1 to 3 for all other Email accounts you have. ?Important - Do not setup circular redirects, for example, ? a.com -> b.com ? b.com -> c.com ? c.com -> a.com This will create a loop between a.com, b.com and c.com. If you have a new Email message in a.com, you will have a infinite loop and generate millions of Emails in all your accounts. Log out You can log out from the Gopher King service here. If you are using a shared/public computer to access Gopher King, you should always Log out after you are done. However, if you are using a private computer or PDA, and you would like to log on automatically next time you come to the site, you should not Log out, just close the browser. For PalmOS users who are using the web clipping application (PQA), Log Out will disable the "Quick Login" function, so next time you log in, you will have to enter both username and password. Chapter 6 Troubleshooting I f you have trouble using your Gopher King service, please go through the common questions here before contacting customer service. General Questions How do I remove unnecessary links (like IRC or DNS Lookup) from the front page? Once you have logged in, click on "Edit Profile", and you can turn off the links by changing the setting to "No". After a hot sync through Avantgo, my hotmail account comes up as "timed out" on each page? This is a very common problem with Avantgo combined with a slow Internet connection. There are a few causes to this problem, ? Avantgo is too busy - they limit the bandwidth used by each user - try to sync at a different time. ? Hotmail is too busy - hotmail server is congested most of the time - try to sync at a different time. ? Changes in the Hotmail system – let us know if you hear anything. ? Slow Internet connection - I have seen this personally, when I sync through a slow (28.8k) and noisy (modem retrains every five minutes) dial-up connection, I got this "timed out" error erratically. When I sync through my cable modem within two minutes, I don't get this error. ? The Gopher King site is too busy – this should be very rare ? User error - you have to follow the instructions carefully... and read the user manual before operating... To eliminate problem 2 and 3 and 4, you can try access your hotmail account using a PC from the GK web site and see how fast/slow the response is. If it loads OK on PC, then it's definitely problem 1. You can also try and see if Hotmail itself is working properly. Try accessing from www.hotmail.com directly, if you get the following, "Hotmail Account Temporarily Unavailable We apologize, but your account is temporarily unavailable. This delay does not affect the entire site or relate specifically to your account, but the machine that holds your account information is temporarily unavailable. We do not expect this delay to last much longer, so please continue to check our site for your account status. We will do our best to make your account available as quickly as possible. We appreciate your support, and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience." That means Hotmail is having trouble and there is nothing Gopher King can do. It seems that Hotmail's machines are unstable and down quite often. After a hot sync through Avantgo, I got a huge channel, how can I reduce the size of the channel? You can try turn off some of the links as mentioned above, and you can reduce the size of your Email folders. First, you need to identify the Email account that is causing this. Second, from a desktop computer (preferably not your handheld), log on and click on "Edit" link under the account you identified in the first step. Third, scroll down to near bottom of the page, here you can choose to BLOCK one or more folders by checking the boxes, click on "Submit" when you are done. Folders blocked will not show up in future hot sync. Password not saved with Avantgo! I enter user id but not password because it is "assigned", push submit, get the successful form submit message, then re sync. Same screen, not the Email screen. Help! Just click on the "assigned" password - it's a bug in Avantgo, and enter your own password, you should be OK. I keep getting this error from my Avantgo sync log, "ERROR: File size limit exceeded (400)," what's wrong? You are hitting the new Avantgo 2MB per sync limit (that's error 400) https://avantgo.com/support/mobile_support/faq/all_faqs4.html#1302830 There is no fix, but you can work around it by limiting the links on the front page, "Edit Profile", and turn off most of the stuff that you don't use. I can download during a hot sync my Email information but when I go to open the Emails it tells me "this page is not available on this device". In other words, I get the notification that I have Emails but the Emails are not on the device to be read. Would you please tell me what a workaround would be or a fix? I assume you use Avantgo. Try increase the link depth of GK on Avantgo. That should help. I lost my username or password, how do I log in? http://www.gopherking.com/lostpassword.html You can try your username or one of the Email addresses listed in your profile. The username/password will be sent to ALL of your Email addresses. What is "ICQ" and how can I set it up on my Palm? http://web.icq.com/ This site has all the info you need to know about ICQ. It's an Internet chat protocol. I like this system, I would like to offer this service through my company as well. No problem, we offer the server software to companies, send us an Email, and we will respond quickly. What if I have a question that is not covered here? Send us an Email at service@gopherking.com and we will respond quickly. Emails When I try to add a new Email account to my profile, why does it say "unable to log into account"? As part of the sign up process, we verify the server, username and password information when you add a new e-mail account. This could be caused by ? Wrong username or password ? Wrong server name or protocol ? Server is down Please check your settings and try again later. This is a common error message seen on AOL accounts, if that's the case, try your AOL instant messenger (AIM) password instead of your screen password. Some users also reported success after resetting the AIM password. Click on the following link to change your AIM password if you are an AOL member. http://aim.aol.com/aimnew/Aim/zipcode.adp?pageset=Aim&promo=73010&client=no Make sure you do NOT have AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) running on your PC before you attempt to add the AOL Email account in Gopher King. NOTE ? Please note that we do NOT support "save a copy to sent items folder" automatically, so you should always Bcc yourself a copy if you would like to keep a copy for yourself. ? The AOL mail system is always congested, so if a page fails to load, wait a few moments and refresh usually helps. ? The AOL mail system does not report number of messages correctly sometimes, and it also has a lag time delivering messages to other domains. One of my Email account is showing "Connection failed" when I tried to check for messages, why is that? 99% of time this is caused by a down server please try again later. I have eight Email accounts under my profile, why does it take more than 30 seconds to check all my Emails? Although we allow up two 12 Email accounts under your profile, the more accounts you have, the longer it takes to check all of them. So it's a good idea to keep the number below five. I am looking at the folder view, what are these symbols? ? Checkbox - you can select multiple messages using checkboxes in front of their subjects and delete them all by clicking on the Delete button ? N - New message ? A - Answered (this only works with IMAP servers) ? @ - Message has attachment I just read a message, and now the INBOX still shows it to be "N" (new)? This is a common behavior if your server protocol is POP. Many of the POP servers do not support the "Message Read" properly. Unfortunately there is no fix at this point. (Unless you replace your Email server with IMAP) Can I undelete the messages that I just deleted? NO. The delete action is permanent and can't be reversed. How do I create a sent items folder as I do not get one on my PDA using Avantgo or on your website once I have logged in? Your manual on the website clearly shows a screen shot of a palm PDA displaying a sent folder. It's created automatically by your Email server - depending the Email server you have. For example, the one in the example is a Hotmail account; hotmail automatically creates five folders for you when you sign up (even if you don't use GK at all), ? Inbox ? Sent items ? Deleted items ? Bulk mail ? Msn promo They were created by the Email server, not GK. GK only detects the presence of a sent items folder on the Email server and uses it. (Email servers that support sent items folders includes Hotmail, NSN web mail, IMAP servers, but NOT POP or MSN POP). You can always bcc yourself a copy, though. I have set the option 'Always Save a copy to Sent Items or Bcc Myself' to Yes but when I send an Email I do not get a copy saved to sent items! Why? The only option I have is an inbox, not a sent box. Hope you are able to clarify. If you have a "sent items" folder, a copy will be saved there. If not, you will get a bcc copy. My inbox in Yahoo Mail shows only 9 mails. Your service shows that I have 49 mails in my inbox. It appears that some of my Email that has already been filed to some folders also shows up as mails in the inbox. How to fix this ? It's impossible to use subfolders with the POP protocol (Yahoo is POP), so everything shows up under INBOX. This is a limitation of the protocol. The only solution is to find a server with IMAP protocol, which supports subfolders. Just curious, is it possible to select which IMAP folders are accessed? Due to the volume of Email I have in some of my folders, Avantgo always times out before it finishes downloading mail. Do this on a PC - Under each Email account you have, click on the "Edit" link and scroll down to the bottom, here you can select the folders you want to block out and click on "Block". I accidentally added one of my e-mail accounts two times to the service. I would like to delete one of them. Please let me know what I need to do? You have to be directly connected to do this. If you are using Avantgo to sync with your handheld, find a desktop computer and follow the instructions here. ? Browse to home page ? Login with your username and password, all your Email accounts are listed. ? Under the account you want to delete, click on the "Delete" link and then click on "Yes" on the next page to confirm. I logged in, BUT my hotmail account isn't showing any folders, what's up with that? Don't panic. The Hotmail servers are up and down all the time, so the only thing you can do is "Refresh", and it should come back most of the time. Can I access my Compuserve Classic Email with Gopher King and Palm VIIx? Do I need Virtual Key ? Gopher King does not support virtual key natively, however, you can setup your CompuServe classic account to use standard POP protocol, http://www.compuserve.com/internethelp/internet101_configpop3mailbox.asp Look under the paragraph starts with "But let's suppose you desire to use an E-mail program that does not support the use of Virtual Key/Remote Pass phrase Authentication..." I have a question as to what the program can do? What I am looking for is a mail program for the Palm OS that will allow multiple folders at the same level of Inbox and/or subfolders under Inbox. Will your service enable multiple folders at the same level of Inbox and/or subfolders under Inbox? Can it synchronize mail by doing a hot sync, or is it only for directly accessing Email accounts using POP? If your service won't do these things, do you know of any other product that does? Our service allows you to have real time access to POP/IMAP/Hotmail mailboxes. It will not be able to access multiple folders or subfolders under the POP protocol. This is not a limit of the program, but a limit of the protocol itself. The RFC 1939 didn't mention anything about multiple folder access under POP. If you want multiple folder/subfolder access, you have to use IMAP protocol, which our service does support. My company's E-mail server is a Microsoft Exchange server, is there any special settings I need to use? You might. Depending on how the Exchange server was set up. You should consult your system administrator for details. ? Option 1 Most of the Exchange servers require to log onto both the domain and the mail service. So you have to enter your username in the following format, domain\userid_on_domain\Email_alias userid_on_domain is the username you type each time you logon to your domain (not your Email) Email_alias is the front portion of your Email address before the @ For example, if your domain name is mycompany, your domain user id is johndoe and your Email alias is john_doe, you will enter mycompany\johndoe\john_doe as your username when you setup your account on our service. You should also check with your system administrator to verify the settings. ? Option 2 Some Exchange servers require NTLM authentication through POP3, we support NTLM authentication in automatically through POP. So there is no special setting here. ? Option 3 Some Exchange servers allow plain username password authentication through POP. No special setting here. ? Option 4 If only Outlook Web Access is enabled, you are out of luck. Can I access my company's Lotus Notes Email via your service? Almost all Lotus notes servers support POP out of box, and IMAP can be enabled as well. You should ask your system administrator if they support POP or IMAP protocol (IMAP is better than POP). If they support either one of them, then you can use our service to access your Email on Lotus notes. You need the following information, ? Your Email address, for example, johndoe@yourdomain.com ? Server name of the POP server, for example, pop3.yourdomain.com ? Your username, for example, johndoe ? Your password, for example, mypassword With Microsoft Outlook, you can select an option to leave messages on the server when you POP your an account. Is this possible with your service? I want to check my work Email from out of the office, but leave the mail on the office server for filing in my Outlook based desktop. That's exactly our service does, it doesn't download you e-mails, and it always leave messages on the server (unless you delete them specifically). I tried to add my Yahoo account and it didn't work, why? You have to enable POP delivery through Yahoo, ? Go to mail.yahoo.com and log in using your username and password. ? Once you are logged in, click on Options link on the left. ? Select "Yahoo! Delivers" under Delivery Services. ? Select "Yes" under Signup and select "Only send me offers for categories I select below". Select "Once a week" and "Text-only" near the bottom, then click on "Finished" to go back to Options page. ? Click on "POP Access & Forwarding" under Mail Management. ? Under Step 1, choose "Web and POP Access" and under Step 2, choose "Text-only". Click OK to go back. WAIT 24 hours for Yahoo to activate the service. Now come back and add your Yahoo account. I added my MSN Email account, but there is always no message in my INBOX, while I can see four messages through MSN's Web Interface, why? You selected "MSN POP Mail" to access your MSN Email account where you should have used "MSN Web Mail", change your account protocol to "MSN Web Mail" and you should be fine. I tried to add my WebTV Email account and it didn't work, why? You have to enable WebTV POP3 Access first from your Web TV. Follow the instructions here, You MUST have an upgraded WebTV to do this (which happened in Spring/Summer 2000), if your WebTV is newer than that, you are fine. If not, call WebTV and ask for the upgrade. (If you've received the Spring/Summer 2000 Upgrade, there is a "hidden" feature that you might find very useful. Until this upgrade, WebTV users were unable to retrieve their WebTV mail remotely from another WebTV, from one username to another, from a Web-based Email account, or from a computer.) Now each WebTV username Email account can be set to allow remote mail retrieval. Here's how to set it up: a. In the username you wish to retrieve Email from, press Mail, click on Settings, then on Remote Mail b. Click on Remote WebTV Mail, which should appear if you've received the upgrade c. Read the next page, then click Continue d. Enter a password (minimum 7-characters, maximum 18 characters) in the boxes. Then click on the box at bottom to enter a checkmark for Allow Remote Access and click Done e. The final screen will show the username and POP-3 server name to enter [from another WebTV, another username, a Web-based Email account, or from a computer for retrieval: Username - your username Server - should be pop.webtv.net Write these down on a piece of paper Note: This procedure must be set up for each individual username you would like to have access Now log onto Gopher King and add your WebTV Email account using these settings. I'd really love to use your service to get my palm.net e-mail but I don't know how to configure it. Nowhere can I find the correct setting for Palm.net's POP server. Can you help? Palm.net Email does not support any of the standard protocols, so it's not supported, sorry. Do you support ATT.net accounts? And How? You need to enable "Internet Mail" from ATT. http://help.att.net/docs/use/Email/webmail/prb_xxx_xxx_geninetaccess.htm?customercontent =customer_Email Then follow the instructions on the "Add a new Email account" page. Device Specific I got a 500 or 502 error on my Palm VII/VIIx/i705 when I try to login, what's up with that? Palm.net upgraded their server software and their name server cannot recognize the gopherking.com domain name sometimes, this is limited to Palm VII/VIIx and i705 users, and you can fix this by downloading the newest version of Gopher King. It contains a "Gopher King Backup" link, which you can use to perform all functions even if you get a 500 or 502. I've added your Avantgo channel to my Pocket PC (Casio EM500) - Added the name password ticked the box and submitted - but didn't get the message about the details being sent on next sync. What happens now? The only thing that worked - a soft reset on the Pocket PC! - Contribution from Paul I downloaded the PQA to my Visor Prism, and the icon appears on the Visor's screen but nothing happens when I touch it. The program does not open. And I can't get the icon to delete (I've followed the typical method for deleting applications from the Palm, including deleting the program from the backup folder on the PC -- all to no avail). Any suggestions for either how to get the program to work or, alternatively, how to delete the icon? You don't need the PQA application for it to work on your Visor, check our setup page for details. Here is one sure way to delete the program from your Visor. ? Like you did, back up all your data, make sure you get them all before going to the next step. ? Delete our PQA from the backup directory. ? Hard reset the visor, see instructions at http://www.handspring.com/support/ts_hard_reset_batt.jhtml ? Do a hot sync and restore all data and other applications ? Done. I have a Palm VII and I downloaded your PQA application and when I click on the icon it does not respond? This could be a damaged PQA file, try download the zipped (sit for Mac) version and unzip (unpack) and install. I am getting iNet 1413 and iNet 1430 errors on my Palm VII when I try to connect, what's going on? iNet xxxx errors are caused by the palm.net service, either a weak signal, or the connection between your palm and the service was somehow interrupted. Palm.net sometimes oversubscribe their user base. In San Jose area, this is always the case between 10AM and 2PM when a lot of the users go online and many of them get an iNet 1413 or iNet 1430. If you are getting these errors consistently, you might want to check out this http://www.palmstation.com/view_article.asp?article=1425 I am using a Palm VII, I have saved my login and password. However, when I try to use the "Quick Login", your system does not recognize me, and I receive message "Quick Login failed. Please try regular login". What wrong? First, make sure you check the "Save my password and login" checkbox on the Palm when you use regular login, and it should remember your settings. Second, it could be that your Palm is not sending the palm ID to the server, either you are not allowing it to go through (by cancel when it ask for the privacy ID), or palm.net is not properly identifying your device. You should check the Wireless settings under Preferences and make sure "Warn when sending ID or location info" is NOT checked - if checked and you answer cancel, the palm ID will not be remembered, and that's how relate the ID to the user on Palm VII. iNet 1441 Database not found when trying to update my software via my Palm VIIx. Can you assist? You need to download the PalmGear updater in order to do wireless update, or you can do a regular hot sync to update the software. Hey, I love your service, but when I try to access an administration site that our company has on the Internet I get a `bad gateway 502' error. Can you explain that to me? That's an error generated by Palm.net, which I got from time to time for no obvious reasons, not from GK. I have called them numerous times and nobody was able to give me an answer. From what I understand, Palm.net's DNS server has trouble recognizing some server names, and no trouble with others, there is no specific pattern to it. So far palm.net has refused to help me to get to the bottom of this, but you can try them as well, and see if your luck is better. I have been unable to log in to Gopher King via my Sprint PCS Kyocera Smartphone for several days now, keep getting authentication failure (Net 1233). Just double checked my user name and password, tried again and got user cancel once and then authentication failure again and again. What do I do to get it working again? It's a great service when it works (only way I have found thus far to check hotmail via this phone). Try your username and password on the web site from a PC, if they work there, then there is something wrong with your connection. Error 1233 failure is commonly seen on Kyocera phones, it's covered on Kyocera's web site, http://www.kyocera-wireless.com/kysmart/keywords_list.htm So you should definitely call Sprint and see what's going on. I have a Kyocera qcp6035 Smartphone. I signed onto the web site and installed the pqa. When I try to log on with my Smartphone, I cannot. Instead, I get the message "Your handheld could not connect to the server. Wait a few minutes and try again. (iNet 1410)" Same message, every time. How can I make this work? Try use a browser instead of the PQA, like the Eudora Web browser, it works better. iNet 1410 is a carrier-generated error, usually that indicates a problem with the proxy server, not GK. I want to know how do I go about getting Email on my Palm V. I have a 3com palm modem and want to know if there is a specific ISP I need to use to get Email (I am in the Chicago area) or can I use any ISP and dial in to the ISP via the modem and get my Email using pop3. Please help. As long as the ISP uses standard PPP protocol to connect and there is no special software to install (e.g., AOL) or special settings to change, it should work with any ISP. Personally I use the same Earthlink account as my laptop and it works fine. There is a good list on this CE site, it is also applicable to Palm devices, http://www.cewindows.net/wce/isp.htm Your article "Getting Gopher King Working on a Cheap WAP Phone" states that the author had difficulties obtaining the Cingular's WAP settings from Cingular. Next to impossible is how I would describe it. Could you *please* provide me with these settings that Cingular has not provided me with? ? Homepage: http://device:home ? Connection type: Continuous ? Connection security: On ? Bearer: Data ? Dial-up number: +14152441012 ? IP address: 199.176.84.11 ? Authentication type: Secure ? Data call type: ISDN ? Data call speed: 9600 ? User name: SBCWAPDATA183060EWSSSCRLKRDBFA ? Password: ZJULDAGEN98810 ? Port: 9201 ? Username and password are case sensitive. I use a Motorola Timeport. Using the mini-browser I can access Gopher King and drill down to the Emails page. When I try to download my Email I get "Web Service Problem" and under the Details section I get "1010: Service read error". What's up with that? Yes, this is due to the 1400 char limit of the mini-browser on the Timeport, I am fairly sure you are using a version 3.X, because I had the same problem, then I switched to version 4.0 (a better phone) and the error 1010 went away (2000 char limit). So far I haven't found a solution to this, because the WAP pages are already running at minimum. I cannot access my hotmail messages all I get is a black screen. I am using a Sony Cmd- z5 WAP enabled phone with Microsoft Mobile Explorer. Help! Microsoft Mobile Explorer (MME) is a very unique browser because it supports both HTML and WAP tags. We have added a routine that will detect this so it should work now. Where is the Submit button??? I cannot access to the service with my WAP Phone (Ericsson R320s) : the "submit" button does not appear. I have tried with 2 different ISPs, the problem is the same. You need to select "submit" from the options menu (how to get to the options menu? it varies by phones, on most Ericsson phones, you hold on to the "yes" key for two seconds and the options menu will pop up), and this applies to all other pages that you need to enter data as well. Newsgroups I just posted a message into a newsgroup, but it's not showing up!!! Although we update our newsgroup server list daily, some of them may go down or refuse posting at any time. Thanks. 1. When you order the Treo with Cingular service, Cingular forces you select the "Data Connect" service, which costs $4.95 per month, AND $0.15 per minute for data calls! Do NOT go for this, you will spend a lot more than you have to. 2. Instead, just select the appropriate voice plan you want, including the estimated minutes of data calls, and put the plan in your shopping cart. Do NOT include the "Data Connect" service. 3. If you have to order "Data Connect," when you get the phone, cancel Data Connect ASAP. 4. THEN after 24 hours call back and tell them you want wireless internet (WAP) for $4 a month. They ask you what phone is and you have to say "Motorola V2282" then you will have the ABILITY to make data calls (same as "Data Connect" w/o rapist 15 cent a minute charges) which (they think) is primarily used to make WAP dial up ISP calls. You can then use it to make the TREO dial up your ISP to get web access on it.
